Solitary confinement was used to isolate prisoners, and political prisoners who were locked up alone here because of sickness, psychological disorder, or difficult behavior suffered even greater than normal physical and spiritual isolation from the outside world. Many of the political prisoners in Oasis Villa who had a special status were locked up alone on the 2nd floor of the Bagua Building to keep them from interacting with other prisoners. Now the solitary confinement cells have been renovated and opened to visitors.
