Kitchen of 2nd and 3rd Battalions
The kitchen for the 3rd squadron had eight large stoves fired by coal and wood. Each brigade had a wooden building to serve as a kitchen, and people were selected from among the political prisoners to handle purchasing and cooking. The rice used was "combat readiness" rice that had been stored for a long time, and in Green Island's humid climate it was Infested with cadelle beetles. Food was limited, and the prisoners grew their own vegetables and domestic animals to increase the amount available to them Sometimes they also bought seafood from local fishermen.
