On 24th of February, 2022, Russia launched a "special military operation" against Ukraine. This de facto war escalated to a military conflict of the largest scale in Europe ever since WWII. Although this “campaign” was triggered by Ukraine's attempt to join NATO, the root cause could be traced back as far as the 2014 Crimean status “referendum” and Russian backed separatist movement.
After the outbreak of a large-scale military conflict in 2022, Ukrainians have demonstrated resilience and perseverance that marveled the world. And now, a war which people thought would end soon has become the new norm for Ukrainians.
When the state of conflict has become a day-to-day reality, perseverance during wartime is not exclusively a trait of men. Women's unwavering presence can also be found as they fight on the front line, secure logistic supplies and give social support to those in need.
To give visibility of women's autonomy and diverse faces manifested in this war, the National Human Rights Museum of Taiwan and Museum of Women's and Gender History of Ukraine collaborated to present an exhibition featuring writing and video recording by Ukrainian women. Their narrative will help the audience to have a sense of the cruelty of the Russo-Ukrainian war through individual woman's personal perspective and reflect on the severe setback for human rights as the result of war.
Exhibition date: April 21 - Nov.21, 2023
